There are some photography sessions that stay with you long after the camera is packed away.
This was one of them.
When this lovely couple got in touch about their wedding anniversary, they weren’t simply looking for a few photographs together. They were travelling all the way from America to Ireland and wanted to create something that felt connected to the place they had chosen to visit.
Their vision was simple: something romantic, atmospheric and a little moody that would capture the beauty of Ireland.
The Gap of Dunloe in Killarney, County Kerry, was the perfect setting.

An Anniversary Session in the Heart of Ireland
Having someone travel from the United States and choose you to photograph such an important part of their trip is something I never take for granted.
They had booked their session before arriving in Ireland, which made the whole experience even more exciting. We already knew they wanted photographs that felt different from the usual bright, posed holiday photographs.
They wanted Ireland itself to be part of the story.
And the Gap of Dunloe certainly delivered.
The enormous mountains, rugged rocks, winding road and changing Irish light created exactly the atmosphere they had hoped for. There was something wonderfully dramatic about the landscape surrounding them, while the couple themselves brought a softness and warmth to the photographs.
It was a beautiful contrast.
Capturing the Moody Beauty of the Gap of Dunloe
The Gap of Dunloe is one of those places where you don’t need to create a complicated backdrop.
It’s already there.
The landscape does so much of the work.
The huge rock formations and mountains gave the photographs a sense of scale, while the road created a natural way to photograph the couple walking together rather than simply standing and posing for the camera.
That was particularly important for this session.
I wanted their photographs to feel like moments rather than poses.
Walking together, looking at each other, holding hands and simply enjoying being in the landscape gave us photographs that felt much more personal.
The slightly moody conditions were exactly what we needed.
Instead of trying to make Ireland look bright and perfect, we embraced the atmosphere. The darker mountains, muted greens, dramatic rock faces and soft light all helped create the feeling they had travelled here to experience.
An Irish Landscape That Became Part of Their Story
One of my favourite things about photographing couples in Ireland is seeing the country through someone else’s eyes.
For those of us who live here, dramatic mountains, winding roads and unpredictable weather can sometimes feel like part of everyday life.
For a couple travelling from America, it’s completely different.
Ireland is an experience.
It’s the landscape, the weather, the winding roads, the mountains, the stone walls and those unexpected moments when the clouds move and the light changes completely.
That is what I wanted to preserve for them.
Their anniversary photographs weren’t just photographs of the two of them.
They were photographs of the two of them in Ireland.
And years from now, I hope they look at these images and remember not only their anniversary, but the feeling of standing together in the Gap of Dunloe.

Couples Photography in Killarney, County Kerry
Killarney is an incredible location for couples photography, particularly for anyone looking for something more natural and atmospheric.
There is such a variety of scenery around the area, from mountains and lakes to woodland, open landscapes and quiet country roads.
For couples visiting Ireland, this makes Killarney a wonderful place to combine a holiday with a photography experience.
You don’t have to be celebrating an anniversary either.
A couples photography session can be a beautiful way to remember:
- An anniversary
- An engagement
- A honeymoon
- A special holiday
- A milestone birthday
- A proposal
- Or simply your time together in Ireland
And you don’t need to be comfortable in front of a camera.
In fact, most couples I photograph aren’t professional models — and that’s exactly how it should be.
Natural, Relaxed Photography in Ireland
For this session, I wasn’t interested in creating photographs that looked overly posed or staged.
Instead, we spent time together, explored the location and allowed the landscape to become part of the photographs.
My approach to couples photography is relaxed and natural. I’ll give you direction when you need it, but I also want you to have space to simply be yourselves.
Sometimes the best photograph isn’t the one where everyone is looking at the camera.
It’s the photograph where you look at each other.
The one where you’re walking hand in hand.
The one where you’re laughing because the wind has caught your hair.
Those little moments are often the photographs that become the most meaningful.
From America to the Gap of Dunloe
Knowing that this couple had travelled from America and specifically chose to book their photography session in Ireland made this one particularly special.
They could have taken photographs anywhere during their trip.
Instead, they chose to make professional photographs part of their anniversary experience and trusted me to capture it.
That is something I am incredibly grateful for.
We had the mountains, the road, the enormous rock formations and that unmistakable Irish landscape around us.
But ultimately, the photographs are about them.
A couple celebrating another year together, exploring somewhere new and creating memories in one of the most beautiful parts of Ireland.
And honestly, what more could you ask for from an anniversary session?
